The German forward struggled for game time at Arsenal this season, and was understandably frustrated with his lack of football.
He was unlikely to see his first team chances improve however, as he just wasn’t making the grade and there were far too many talented players ahead of him.
The 29-year-old was shipped out on loan to Inter Milan, but he hasn’t fared much better in Serie A. He is unlikely to secure a permanent move to the Italian side, and therefore will return to Arsenal this summer – at least temporarily.

His manager Ali Pektas claims his client’s future is still wide open, and there are a number of options available to him.
“Anything could happen,” he said.
“Last summer he could have moved to Galatasaray, but it never materialised. Every summer Lukas and I go on holiday to Turkey.
“For the moment he’s on loan at Inter, and when it ends at the end of the season he could return to Arsenal, where he still has a year on his contract.
“With regard to his future, all I can say is that anything could happen, even a transfer to Turkey. Why not?
“He appreciates it [Turkish football] a lot, and he wants to keep playing at a high level.”
Podolski was always a fan favourite at Arsenal, but despite a few truly memorable goals, never really offered enough on the pitch.
If he returns to the Emirates it will surely just be to rot on the bench once again, so it would be best for everyone if he were to find a permanent move away come the end of the season.
