There have been strong rumours of a new deal for Arsenal left-back Nacho Monreal, and Arsene Wenger has all but confirmed the rumours with his recent comments, as reported by the Evening Standard.
Monreal has been one of the most improved Arsenal players over the last couple of seasons, and has gone from strength to strength ever since his arrival at the Emirates. He looked out of his depth somewhat when he first made the switch to north London, but has not only settled and improved greatly since then, but has unquestionably displaced Kieran Gibbs as our starting full-back.
He’s more than deserving of a new deal, and hopefully once he puts pen to paper he’ll be at the club for years to come.
Wenger has confirmed that talks were ongoing with the 29-year-old, and it seems as though it’s only a matter of time before a deal is announced.
“We’ll announce that at some stage, when it’s finished,” Wenger said.
“It’s not over the line completely but we’re not far.”

As the report suggests, Monreal’s current deal runs until 2017. There has been no confirmation from Wenger about the length or wages of the new deal, but it is believed it will keep Monreal at the Emirates until at least 2019 (via the Metro).
The Spaniard has been arguably one of our most reliable players over the last year, which has turned him into something of a fan favourite. Defensive stability is something we haven’t always had, so the fact that Monreal has contributed so heavily to our record at the back has seen him grow increasingly popular.
Arsenal transfer news
Kieran Gibbs has been handed plenty of chances to show he deserves a starting spot, but has never shown anything to suggest he should be starting ahead of Monreal. The complete lack of mistakes in Monreal’s game – like the one Gibbs made for the Sunderland goal on the weekend – is exactly what Arsenal fans love so much about the former Malaga man.
