Arsene Wenger has stated his desire for ‘experience’ as he looks to bring in another defender during the summer transfer window (via Arsenal.com).
Wenger was speaking ahead of Thursday’s match against the MLS All-Stars and talked of the pressing need for defensive cover. Arsenal were already suffering from the absences to Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel Paulista but the most bitter blow came with the news about Per Mertesacker. The German defender has been ruled out for up to five months with a knee injury.
“We have to look for an option to get a bit more experience.” Wenger told the official Arsenal website.
“We will see some of our young centre backs on Thursday as well. With Per being out, we are a bit short on the experience front and we are looking to bring somebody in.”
It’s good news for Arsenal fans that Wenger is taking a pragmatic approach to transfer dealings at long last. The club have been lacking in that position for a number of seasons and probably would have needed reinforcements without the injury crisis.
Arsenal are left with Calum Chambers as the most senior centre back in the squad ahead of the match on Thursday. The former Southampton man has made just 35 Premier League appearances for Arsenal during his two seasons at the club but seems like a wise old head next to new signing Rob Holding. Holding turned out 26 times for Bolton Wanderers during his three years in the senior team but will undoubtedly play some part on Thursday.

In terms of possible signings, one name stands above all others. Shkodran Mustafi is the player who seems to be most coveted by Wenger. On Tuesday it was revealed that Arsenal had approached the German World Cup winner who would greatly improve the squad. Regarding transfers, Wenger remained typically tight lipped. “If we sign somebody, we will announce it.” He told Arsenal.com. “But I cannot tell you much more on that.” We’ll have to wait and see then.
