Arsene Wenger is more likely to pursue a deal for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho than he is for Arturo Vidal, despite rumours claiming that a deal to sign the Chilean star is close, The Evening Standard reports.
The report claims that recent noises regarding a potential move for Vidal are false, with the 28-year-old not currently on Arsene Wenger’s list of transfer targets.
Despite Francis Coquelin’s emergence, Wenger is still looking to add another holding midfielder to our squad and Carvalho seems the most likely option, according to The Evening Standard.

Carvalho is more of a specialist defensive midfielder than Vidal, which would make a deal for him seem feasible. The 23-year-old is currently making waves in UEFA’s U21 European Championships, guiding Portugal to the final of the competition.
Carvalho is also very comfortable on the ball, and if Wenger is looking for Mikel Arteta’s long-term replacement he can definitely rely on the powerful midfielder to dictate the game from deep.

The boss generally likes our deepest midfielder to be able to start off our attacks on the ball, which prevents teams from trying to press us high.
One thing is for sure, Wenger must add another body in the centre of our midfield to prevent Mathieu Flamini from getting regular game time should Coquelin pick up an injury.
