Arsene Wenger is in confident mood ahead of Arsenal’s trip to St Mary’s to face Southampton, and believes the 2-1 win over Manchester City will give his players a much needed boost (via Arsenal.com).
The English Premier League has been the most hotly contested of Europe’s top five leagues this season, and that has a lot to do with the fine form of surprise league leaders Leicester City. However, Arsenal have a great chance to take top spot back from Leicester, who slipped up against Liverpool, losing 1-0 at the end of a well fought out match.
With the January transfer window close to opening and the last two matches of the year being against Southampton and Bournemouth respectively, Arsenal have a relatively easy route to being top dog come New Year. Arsene Wenger has highlighted how our recent win over Manchester City could prove crucial, and believes the balance between urgency and confidence will help us beat both teams.
Bournemouth may have beaten Manchester United, but it can safely be said that the Red Devils are currently facing something akin to a crisis – a crisis they slipped further into after losing 2-0 against Stoke City in the early kick-off. Arsenal however, have no such troubles, having beaten potential title rivals Manchester City in their last match 2-1. That result should allow Arsene Wenger’s men to carry some confidence into their fixture with Southampton, who are struggling for form themselves at the moment.
Arsenal are known for being cautious in the transfer market, and especially so in January. But the number of injuries suffered by Arsenal this season and the length of each injury has made one thing very obvious, Arsene Wenger must make a move in January if he is to sustain what is seemingly Arsenal’s best chance of grabbing a league title in years.
Arsene Wenger agrees that the win has done his men good, and believes the boost in confidence will help his side kick on in the title race.

“The confidence following a victory like the one against Manchester City increases dramatically,” he said.
“What you want to maintain is the urgency and remember how much a defeat hurts. That balance between confidence and urgency has to be right.”
Arsenal transfer news
Arsenal fans will be hoping that the Gunners make a big statement this weekend, by moving ahead of Leicester and topping the table ahead of their clash with Bournemouth on Monday. Although the season has a long way to go, being top on New Year’s Day would certainly help their aspirations of being there in May.
