According to this morning’s Daily Mail, Basel defensive midfielder Mohamed Elneny could be Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s only signing during the January transfer window. The British tabloid newspaper suggests that Wenger is happy with his team and feels that the current squad is big enough to see him through until the end of the season.
Various reports, including the Daily Telegraph and the Metro, are suggesting that Arsenal have found their defensive midfielder in the form of Basel’s Mohamed Elneny, and that the 23-year old will undergo a medical in Switzerland before signing for Arsenal shortly after the transfer window opens on Friday.
Negotiations are currently underway with the Swiss club over a transfer, with the Telegraph claiming that a deal worth £5 million rising to £7 million has already been agreed upon, and that the expectation of the Gunners agreeing personal terms with the Egyptian international are positive.
According to the Mail, Arsenal looked at other defensive midfielders, including Borussia Monchengladbach’s 23-year-old Granit Xhaka and Sevilla’s Polish international enforcer Grzegorz Krychowiak, but with both sides unlikely to want to sell halfway through the season, Wenger decided to take a gamble on Elneny,
The Egyptian is still a young player at only 23, but represents a gamble on the part of Arsene Wenger, despite fitting the profile of the kind of player Wenger likes to sign.
The Mail describes Elneny as a younger version of current Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini, and while he may not be a classic holding midfielder, he has the ability to sit deep and read the game well.
