Petr Cech could be the new Arsenal captain for the 2016/17 season, with the Czech international having a phenomenal impact during his first season at the club, as reported by the Daily Mail.
Mikel Arteta is the club’s current captain, but consistent injuries and the fact that he just isn’t the player he used to be means he’s barely featured this season. Per Mertesacker has spent most of the season as our captain, but he certainly has his shortcomings.
The giant German seems to be an excellent leader off the field, but on the pitch he has limitations. He’s not always the most vocal at the back, and his lack of pace obviously means he’s not always the best choice.
Cech has been a truly calming influence at the back though, and our defence has looked ten times stronger with him between the sticks. Not only has he added a huge amount through his superb goalkeeping, but also through his leadership and experience.
He would be an excellent captain, but whether or not he’s handed the armband next season remains to be seen. Arsene Wenger has shown extraordinary faith in Per Mertesacker, and despite some fantastic performances from Gabriel Paulista the veteran continues to start ahead of him. Only recently has the Brazilian started to see more regular first team football, but unfortunately injury has put paid to that.
