Arsene Wenger has admitted he was tempted to bring in David Beckham at various points of the midfielder’s illustrious career, however he was unable to compete financially with other top clubs.
The 38-year-old has officially called time on his impressive career that has seen him win ten domestic titles in four different countries including his most recent glory with PSG in France.
The former England captain has played for some of the world’s elite clubs, most notably Manchester United, Real Madrid and AC Milan – however despite Wenger’s interest he never played for Arsenal.
Beckham trained with the North London side twice before securing moves to various clubs, and while keeping fit with the Gunners Wenger saw first hand the midfielders dedication and commitment.
When asked if he had ever been interested in signing him, Wenger said:
Yes I was, but it was at the period where we could not afford to pay him. After that it was a question mark as well before he went to Milan, but he was in a position where we did not really need players.
It was always a pleasure to have him here for his attitude and behaviour, he gained respect from everybody through his dedication and commitment.

What remains in your memory is his genuine commitment and dedication, his natural humility which he always had, that will stay forever.
You forget sometimes if he has won this championship or that championship, but you never forget how he behaved, and that is a credit to him.
I have a huge respect for his passion for the game, his huge commitment, his mental strengths because he was under a lot of pressure throughout his career, and his dedication. I think that is where he is an example.
Beckham would certainly have been an interesting signing a few years back when Arsenal needed some experienced heads in the midfield. Unfortunately high wages were unachievable but now the debt for the stadium has been paid off Wenger can actually sign the star players he wants.
It was great the former England international trained with the Gunners as the likes of Wilshere and Oxlade-Chamberlain were able to play alongside the legend and learn from his work ethic and embrace the precision with everything he did.
Even though he never played for Arsenal you have to pay tribute to the outstanding sportsman, especially if you are English, as it’s hard not to acknowledge the dedication and skill he brought to the beautiful game of football.
Happy retirement David!
