Wenger has said Joel Campbell will feature in his plans for the upcoming season, and is likely to take part in their pre-season tournament this weekend.
The Costa Ricans future had been placed in doubt ahead of the upcoming campaign, with reports suggesting he could be loaned out once more. However he will get a chance to impress the Arsenal faithful this weekend at the Emirates Cup.
The striker demonstrated his ability at this summers World Cup in Brazil, leading the line for Costa Rica which had naturally excited some Arsenal fans who had yet to witness the player properly in action.
Wenger suggested Campbell could face Benfica today at Emirates and will feature in his plans for the season ahead.
The Arsenal boss told reporters on Friday:
Yes, he [Campbell] is part of my plans. He might play tomorrow against Benfica.
There had been murmurs that the 22-year-old could be farmed out on yet another loan move, this time to a Premier League outfit. But Campbell will be given a chance to make an impression on Wenger with the new season approaching.
- Arsenal must outmanoeuvre Galatasaray to win race for £2m ‘bargain’ transfer
- Arsenal reportedly set to sign free agent after impressive trial
- Arsenal have ‘concrete interest’ in signing Bayern Munich II star
He has spent three consecutive seasons on loan since joining the north London club in 2011, most notably last campaign he played a key role with Olympiakos. Work permit issues have held up his Arsenal career so far, but now he has a chance to shine with plenty of competition for first team places.
Wenger will have to decide between Yaya Sanogo, Campbell and young Englishman Chuba Apkom to provide depth up front, with one of the aforementioned trio likely to spend time on loan this campaign.
Campbell certainly has raised his profile with some of his performances with Costa Rica, but other matches he did go missing. Hopefully we get to see a bit of what he can do this weekend.
