Arsene Wenger says Theo Walcott has returned to full fitness but lacks competition. Walcott was an unused substitute in the match against Sunderland that Arsenal won 2-0 courtesy of a brace from Alexis Sanchez.
The forward was named for the first time in the squad since January. Walcott had ruptured his cruciate in a FA Cup game against the Spurs.
Walcott should get some game time against Burnley next weekend and according to Wenger the Englishman is fit but lacks the game time.
He’s fit. He lacks competition. Physically he lacks two things: contact in the Premier League and competition. But fitness wise there is no problem at all.
The boss also sympathised for Vito Mannone after the former Gunner made a hilarious mistake right at the end to gift Sanchez and Arsenal the second goal.
Of course. He has been educated at Arsenal. He’s like everybody else – the confidence has dropped a little bit because of the defeat last week but he has shown his quality since he arrived here and will show that again.
Once again we were nothing short of disappointing today but in the end we got the 3 points and a clean sheet to boot. Hopefully this victory serves as a springboard for the coming games, also with Walcott’s return we have that all important goal threat from the wings. Fingers crossed he starts finding the back of the net ASAP.
Latest injury update on Gibbs and Arteta:
I think Kieran Gibbs has a hip problem. He wanted to go on but he couldn’t. Mikel Arteta got a kick on his thigh but I don’t think it’s bad.
Fingers crossed Gibbs and Arteta recover with a week between the Gunners next fixture.
