It has been a nightmare start for the gunner’s this season, the worst start to a season in 58 years in fact and as Arsene Wenger puts it, it is just not good enough for a team that possesses the quality of players that Arsenal has.
The performance against Blackburn was a defensive nightmare and although we opened the match in great style, when push came to shove our defensive frailties were again on show for all to see, particularly with Koscielny, Djourou and Santos who had a torrid game at the back.
On Arsenal’s start to the season, only managing 4 points from 5 matches, Wenger finally looked passed the positives and put it bluntly saying:
That is terrible. There’s nothing more to say than that. It’s just not good enough and of course we are very frustrated.
If you look at the number of goals we have conceded that is not good enough — you cannot come here and concede four goals the way we did.
I cannot say I am not worried when you see the performance we have put in.
It’s just not defensively solid enough. When you’re 2-1 in front against Blackburn, you know that if you are solid defensively you will score goals.
- Arsenal told ‘no less than £50m’ for top defensive transfer target
- Arsenal keen to sign 16th best ranked Premier League stopper
- Arsenal keeping tabs on €40m Italy star after ‘outstanding’ season
It was not all negative — that’s the frustrating thing. There were a lot of positives as well but we didn’t bring out the focus to get out of the game.
At the moment we do not have the capability to focus for 90 minutes defensively to win games like that.
Once you’re 2-1 up with the quality we have it is important that you don’t give cheap goals away like we did.
Well, I suppose the only good thing there is to look forward to is there is only one way to go from this performance and that is on the way up. It is hard to recall such a weak showing in a second half, but I am hoping for all our sakes that Arsenal never perform like that again. It is onto Shrewsbury town from here and hopefully young Miyaichi and new signing Park will be able to impress, as well as our back-line keeping a clean sheet!
