Arsene Wenger believes under-fire forward Gervinho will play a big part in Arsenal’s season run-in and he holds the hope that the Ivorian’s goal on the weekend will inspire some self confidence.
It was his first goal for the Gunners since October, and the Arsenal faithful seemed to have lost confidence in the forward who started the 2012/13 season brightly but suffered a heavy dip in form.
And while Wenger has admitted Gervinho has come under scrutiny for his performances, he still has the Frenchman’s backing to regain his confidence.
Wenger said on the 25-year-old’s goal-scoring cameo against Swansea City:
I know that Gervinho was under a lot of negative pressure because he missed chances and as well because I know how big that win was for us.
He had the African Nations Cup and came back a little bit jaded but now I’m sure until the end of the season he will be a big force for us.

He is sensitive – he needs the support. He wants to do well, he loves football – when he doesn’t score of course he is down.
He gives us something different. He can dribble, he can provoke. Recently I felt he lacked confidence because when he got in front of goal you could see that it was not spontaneous. I hope that goal will give him a lot of confidence.
Gervinho has had some what of a love-hate relationship with fans since his 2011 summer move. He has been known to score some crackers while miss some absolute sitters, causing frustration with his inconsistency.
But while he remains in red and white he should have our full support despite his inability to become an Arsenal great. He hardly has a footballing brain like Robert Pires or Freddie Ljungberg, but like Wenger said he adds something different. He likes to run at players and cause mistakes, hopefully he remains a squad player though rather than a starter, Oxlade-Chamberlain is a far more potent option!
