According to the mirror Arsenal to make shock £20m bid for Aston Villa’s Stewart Downing.
The England winger is reportedly a new target for the Gunners as Liverpool have not completed the transfer of the ex-Boro man, and apparently Arsene Wenger is resigned to losing Samir Nasri.
Wenger seems determined to sign a player with Premier League experience who will go straight into Arsenal’s starting eleven, and the signing of Downing – plus an experienced defender – would mark a definite shift in the Frenchman’s recruitment policy.
Downing is apparently keen to join a club that will challenge for silverware and play in the Champions League, while he knows that his chances of playing for England in the 2012 European Championships will improve at one of England’s top clubs.
Liverpool have reportedly had an offer for Downing accepted by Aston Villa, and while no deal has been concluded it seems unlikely that Villa’s new manager Alex McLeish will be able to stop him leaving if the top clubs are interested.
To be honest I hope this doesn’t go through, what a waste of time. Downing is incredibly inconsistent and doesn’t have the ‘flare’ that a winger should have. There’s no way he should be ahead of Walcott, Arshavin or even Vela, it would just be a half-a** signing really, especially for his extortionate £20m price tag.
