Arsene Wenger says Arsenal’s victory at the Stadium of Light was ‘very important’ for the morale of the team. Arsenal had won only twice in 8 league matches and visited Sunderland on the back of a dispiriting draw at home to Hull City.
Thankfully Arsenal won 2-0 against the Black Cats courtesy of a brace from South American dynamo Alexis Sanchez. The win was Arsenal’s first in 4 games and lifted Arsenal to fifth in the league table.
Arsene Wenger was also pleased that his side finally kept a clean sheet, the Gunners’s first clean sheet since the 3-0 win at Villa. The boss revealed that he would have happily taken a 1-0 win before the game and was eager to compensate for the dropped points against Hull.
If you’re not capable of keeping clean sheets, you don’t move forward because if you always have to score three goals to win a game, at some stage it doesn’t work, so I am happy. [It was] very pleasing. [The team was] very focused, very united, very concentrated not to make mistakes. In the end we got a good win with a clean sheet on top. I’m very happy about that. It’s our second away game in three days. Before the game, I would have signed for a 1-0 – it became a 2-0 very late in the game. I’m very happy. We dropped two points against Hull, so we could compensate and win today.
Wenger also hailed Arsenal’s saviour Alexis Sanchez and says the Chilean is a winner
He kept going, Alexis. He goes at you – he’s not frightened to go forward. Sometimes you think his passing is not quick enough but he’s very efficient and he really plays to win. He’s a winner.
To be honest, without him we would be in an unthinkable position now, he not only scores goals but works his socks off, forces opposition into mistakes and is so reminiscent of a certain 40 million and 1 pound man. We may have failed with that bid but in our £35 million man from Barcelona, we have potentially a better player minus the baggage.
