Arsene Wenger has said that he wants Mesut Özil to become something of a leader at Arsenal after the German renewed his contract at the club (via Arsenal.com).
Despite bringing in quality players like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, the new deal for Mesut Özil was the best signing of the window for Arsenal.
The German committed to a new three-year deal which will see him become the highest-paid player in the club’s history.
Özil has become the key man at the Emirates since his 2013 arrival and now, Arsene Wenger has spoken about the new deal for his star man.
“Overall it’s good news for us,” Wenger said in his pre-match press conference.

“When you look at the transfer market today, the fact that you can keep a player of that calibre is of course good news.
“The fact that he committed for a longer period shows as well that he will have to do that as well on the pitch and lead the team.”
Leading the team is something which Özil has been accused of failing to do in recent years. But not, Arsene Wenger thinks now is the time for the German to step up into more of a leadership role.
“He has committed his future to the club in a period where we are in a trick position on that front, in qualifying for the Champions League.
“You expect that he becomes the leader and takes the responsibility to lead the team to success.”
It was great to see that Mesut Özil has committed to the club for another few years. The German playmaker is a key player at Arsenal and will only improve now he has better players playing around him.
