The Gunners head into the clash five points clear at the top of the Premier League table and on the back of impressive wins over Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund.
The North London club have managed to keep consecutive clean sheets against top opposition, and the Frenchman has been pleased with his side’s new-found defensive stability.
Speaking to the Arsenal official website, he said:
We have made a lot of improvements at the back in our defensive game. We have done well in the last two games, but there is a lot to do.
We cannot come to the conclusion that we are in a position where we can relax – we have a lot more to achieve. We have won nothing at all, we have just won two games, and what is important is what we achieve in the future.
The defensive urgency, the defensive focus of everybody from the first to the last minute [has improved]. You couldn’t feel in the Dortmund game that our concentration level dropped at any moment. For the first time from the first to the last minute our concentration was at a very high level.
Arsene Wenger feels the center back pair of Mertesacker and Koscielny have developed a fine understanding and believes they complement each other very well. He added:
It does work [as a partnership], because they have the quality individually, they have the confidence and they certainly complement each other well, and also maybe because the whole team focuses to help them out as well.

We rush our game less, we do not panic, we have a bit more confidence and it is another good opportunity to show that on Sunday [at Man United].
The confidence level is not set and certain for ever, it goes up and down with recent results of the team. Because our recent results have been stronger, the confidence levels will be higher. The commitment and the resilience need to be high as well.
Arsenal have had a great week so far with back to back wins against Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund, now they end the week with a trip to face Manchester United at Old Trafford this Sunday. With those two results the Gunners proved to themselves and their critics that they can get positive results from the best teams around. They are unbeaten in their last 15 away games in all competitions and will be in confident mood going into the match.
In the past, Arsenal would have gone to Old Trafford and been intimidated but it won’t be the scenario this weekend as the Gunners are high on confidence and are fearless this season. United will have their work cut out. As Wenger stated we should not relax and become complacent, hopefully Arsenal will get something from the match and continue the unbeaten away run.
