Arsene Wenger may not be buying the defensive midfielder we all crave this summer, the physical presence who can guard the back four and add some much needed grit to our engine room.
The Gunners have a number of midfielders on their books that occupy the position. Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta are the obvious two who will most likely duke it out for a starting spot in the XI, while the fit-again-but-for-how-long-we-don’t-know Abou Diaby can certainly do a job in the deeper role and now young prodigy Calum Chambers who Wenger feels has the necessary attributes for the role.
The likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and William Carvalho have been the most heavily linked deep lying midfielders, while Sami Khedira has been continually linked all summer – but it’s still difficult to see Wenger adding another number to the midfield even though we need it.
Unfortunately Arteta and Flamini are not the most agile. The Spaniard becomes exposed against quick opposition, hardly an ideal trait to have, and he isn’t getting any younger. He is still a very important member of the squad and we will see why he is Wenger’s first choice again this season, but should we not be looking ahead to the future?
The future could rest with Chambers. The defender played at centre half during the Emirates Cup and looked great. A promising start to his Arsenal career, but he looks an ideal candidate to occupy the centre of defence and provide cover at right back this season.

It’s difficult to see Wenger buying another midfielder unless he ships off Flamini or Arteta. That’s not saying he shouldn’t however as we need more of a physical presence in the engine room. But I wouldn’t put it past him to utilize Diaby this season and look to use Chambers there in the future.
