Mesut Özil has a book coming out later this month and an extract has been published, revealing a shocking spat between the German and Jose Mourinho. In the book, Özil recounts an incident when the pair almost came to blows in the Real Madrid dressing room (via Sport Witness).
Mesut Özil is usually someone who grabs the headlines. Whether it’s for his incredible ability, seemingly poor work rate or the issue with his new contract, the German isn’t too far from the back pages.
Well, in the coming weeks we’ll be seeing even more of the German international because Mesut Özil has a book coming out.
In this extract published by Bild, Özil remembers almost coming to blows with Jose Mourinho while the pair were at Real Madrid. Coming off the pitch and into the dressing room, the Portuguese manager was apparently unhappy with Özil’s work-rate and let him know.
‘“You think two beautiful passes are enough… You think you’re so good that fifty percent is enough”,’ Mourinho reportedly said.
‘He pauses. Stares at me with his dark brown eyes. I stare back. Like two boxers at the stare-down before the first round.

‘He shows no emotion. Just waits for a response from me. How much I hate him right now. And I love Mourinho actually.’
‘“Oh, are you giving up now? You’re such a coward. What do you want? To creep under the beautiful, warm shower? Shampoo your hair? To be alone? Or do you want to prove to your fellow players, the fans out there, and me, what you can do”.’
Özil wrote that he was so furious with his manager that he even threw his shirt at Mourinho, telling him to wear it instead.
It’s a fascinating and explosive revelation which gives a tremendous insight to both Jose Mourinho and Özil himself. We most also ask if this is the style of management which Özil truly needs to flourish. His time at Real Madrid was the best spell of his career and these quotes may point to why that is. Hopefully, we will get even more inside knowledge from Özil in the coming weeks.
